Achenyo Idachaba-Obaro is a Computer Scientist turned Creative Social Entrepreneur. She is the Founder of MitiMeth, an award-winning Social Enterprise transforming waste and building livelihoods through the transformation of invasive aquatic weeds and agricultural residues. Her passion lies in producing handwoven interior décor such as home textiles, mirrors, area rugs, lighting, dining-ware, planters, art, stationery, accent furniture and fashion accessories from these renewable resources. To date, MitiMeth has trained over 700 women from communities across Nigeria and Ghana to weave from from natural fibres. MitiMeth’s unique handmade pieces have been used to style Microsoft, Facebook and Verod Capital offices in Nigeria and have also featured in showcases at Vienna Design Week, Lagos Fashion Week, Eko Design, Milan Fashion Week and Milan Design Week. Achenyo is a 2022 MIT Legatum Foundry Fellow, one of YNaija and LLA’s 2017 100 Most Inspiring Women in Nigeria, a 2017 Vital Voices VV Lead Fellow, a 2015 Tony Elumelu Foundation Fellow, a 2014 Cartier Women’s Initiative Fellow and a 2013 YouWIN Awardee. She has been featured on BBC, Deutsche Welle TV, CNBC Africa, CNN’s African Start-Up and a Google Africa Campaign. Her TED Talk has 1.8 million views and her work has been featured in several publications including a 2018 UN Environment Programme publication on “Exploring the Potential for Adopting Alternative Materials to reduce Marine Plastic Litter”.
